Mirring Birnong, meaning beside the Maribyrnong River, is a renovation and addition to a modest home in Moonee Ponds. The project reimagines an underused rear portion into a warm, open living space that connects directly with the garden and afternoon light. A restrained material palette — warm timber and natural stone — brings texture and calm, while careful detailing grounds the new work in the home’s history.

Working closely with the builder and client, the design balances robustness and refinement, pairing tactile materials with precise, quiet gestures. The outcome is a series of generous yet intimate spaces that feel equally suited to daily family life and quiet retreat.

The project represents an ongoing interest in how contemporary architecture can extend the life and relevance of existing homes, creating new chapters of use while respecting the story already written in their walls.
